#GathingsLawTalk Prenups, Fact Or Myth?
/A wedding is a beautiful and special occasion; it’s one of life’s big milestones. However, before entering into a marriage, you may want to consider a prenuptial agreement. Prenups are more often than not seen in a negative light and maybe considered an easy out for one party. However, it’s important that you understand the facts from the myths.
Many couples believe that a prenuptial agreement is unnecessary if they’re not rich. This is not true. Prenups are not only meant for the rich. Prenuptial agreements are meant to protect your current assets when entering into a marriage and your future assets that you may acquire throughout the course of your marriage. Having such a mutual agreement will save you and your spouse a lot of heartache and anger should you decide to divorce.
Additionally, many believe that a prenuptial agreement will only protect the wealthier spouse. However, this is not true. A prenup is meant to equally protect both spouses. It is not intended to give either spouse the upper hand. A prenup is meant to allow spouses to come to a legally binding agreement with negotiations and legal representation so that in the event of a divorce a decision has been made on how assets will be divided.
